Search on for abandoned girl's parents in Rajasthan

Jaipur, May 23 (IANS) Police in Rajasthan's Bundi town are looking for parents of an eight-month-old girl who was found abandoned at a bus stand in the town Sunday, officials said Wednesday.

The child, who the police suspects was abandoned for being a girl, was Wednesday handed over to a children's home on the directions of a court after she underwent treatment at a hospital for three days.

The baby girl was found wrapped in a cloth near a reservation window of the Rajasthan Roadways bus stand in Bundi, 225 km from here.

"A sanitation worker spotted her first and informed the bus stand officials. A police team rushed there and questioned poeple at the bus stand about the parents of the girl. No one came forward to claim her," a police officer told IANS.

The officer said the girl was suffering from malnutrition and fever. "She was rushed to a hospital where she underwent treatment till Tuesday."

A police complaint was registered against the girl's unidentified parents for abandoning her.

"Prima facie, it seems that the child was abandoned by her parents as it was a girl. Incidents of infant girls being found abandoned are quite frequent. But it is shocking that someone was cruel enough to abandon the girl after raising her for eight months," said the officer. He said a search had been launched for the girl's parents.

The officer said a metropolitan magistrate's court in Bundi Tuesday directed the police to hand over the girl to Kota Karni Vihar Samiti.

According to Census 2011, Rajasthan has 883 girls between the age of 0-6 for every 1,000 boys. The state's sex ratio in 2001 was 909.
