Jailed former Sri Lankan army chief Fonseka set to be released, says wife
Colombo, May 18 (ANI): Jailed former Sri Lankan army chief, General Sarath Fonseka could be released from prison, according to his wife.
According to the BBC, Anoma Fonseka said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had personally conveyed the news to her on Wednesday.
Anoma said that Rajapaksa has not given her a specific time for her husband's release, but she expected it to happen this weekend.
"I am not sure when exactly it will happen, but I have an expectation it will be soon," she said.
She said that General Fonseka was in better health after suffering from heavy cough for three months.
Meanwhile, a group of political prisoners have gone on hunger strike demanding their release following Fonseka's release.
"If Mr Fonseka, who has been convicted, can be freed why not us who haven't even been charged?" one of the prisoners said in an interview with the BBC Sinhala service.
General Fonseka led the army to victory over Tamil Tiger rebels in 2009.
He was detained in February 2010 after losing presidential election campaign against Rajapaksa.
In September 2010, he was jailed after a military court found him guilty of corruption. (ANI)
