US appoints special envoy Mitchell as full ambassador of Myanmar

Washington, May 18 (ANI): The Obama administration has named the first full ambassador to Myanmar in more than two decades as political ties between the two countries are improving.

The White House has made its current special envoy to Myanmar an ambassador to the same country.

Derek Mitchell has overseen US engagement with Myanmar as the country also known as Burma, has undergone startling political reform, News24 reports.

If confirmed by the Senate, Mitchell would be the first US ambassador in the country since 1990. A lower-level diplomatic officer currently represents the country. (ANI)
