London, May 17(ANI): Manchester United, who recently launched their new 'Made in Manchester' home kit for the next season, have actually plugged in a historic old photograph of Oldham on the kit.
Nike, the manufacturers of the new patterned top, claims it was inspired by the cotton industry that dominated the city when the team was formed in 1878.
The image, which features the United badge and the 'Made of Manchester slogan, has the caption: "Cotton mills packed the skyline back in Manchester's industrial heyday. Life was defined by hard graft and long days at work."
But experts have established the picture is of Oldham.
"The photo is of the Coldhurst area of Oldham, just north-west of the town center. The nearest mill shown is the Coldhurst Hall Mill," The Manchester Evening News quoted a spokesman for the Oldham Local Studies and Archives team, as saying.
"The photo is taken from approximately Sunfield Road, looking over the pens and allotments in the foreground. "The nearest terrace of houses are situated on Trinity Street, named after the church whose bell tower can be seen on the left - Holy Trinity, Coldhurst," the spokesman added.
A spokesman for Nike, who recently signed a six-year, multi-million pound deal to make City's kits from next season, said a historian supplied the image.
He said: "We mistakenly included a photograph featuring mills in Oldham rather than Manchester on a Facebook post to promote the new Manchester United home kit. The image will not be used in any other part of the campaign." (ANI)
