Sania gains four places in tennis singles rankings

New Delhi, May 14 (IANS) Indian tennis star Sania Mirza moved up in the world women's singles tennis rankings from 191 to 187.

 

In the rankings released over the weekend, Sania leads the Indian contingent and has 313 ranking points followed by Rushmi Chakravarthi who is ranked 513 in both singles and doubles segment.

 

Sania, however, dropped three places in the doubles department and is placed 12th in the world.

 

The doubles side saw no major changes with seventh-ranked Leander Paes continuing to lead the Indian contingent followed by 12th-placed Rohan Bopanna and 14th-ranked Mahesh Bhupathi.

 

Indian tennis ace Somdev Devvarman crept up five places and is ranked 230.

 

Somdev the highest ranked Indian is followed by Yuki Bhambri ranked 297 with 147 ranking points. Yuki jumped nine places and is ahead of 376 ranked Vishnu Vardhan.

 

Victoria Azarenka of Belarus holds on to the top spot in women's singles despite going down in the final to second placed Russian Maria Sharapova in the WTA Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

 

The Belarusian also lost to Serena Williams of US in the finals of the Madrid Open Sunday, however her Russian rival didn't manage to gain any points on her as she was knocked out in quarters.

 

On the men's side Roger Federer of Switzerland leapfrogged Spaniard Rafael Nadal after the Swiss maestro won the Madrid title for the third time.

 

Serbia's Novak Djokovic continues to lead the men's singles.

 

Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond of United States are ranked number one in the women's doubles category.
