Khan vs. Peterson title match called off after champion fails drug test

London, Thu, 10 May 2012 ANI

London, May 10(ANI): Bolton-based boxer Amir Khan has revealed his world light-welterweight title fight against champion Lamont Peterson on May 19 has been called off, following the American's failed drug test.

Khan's US promoter Richard Schaefer had revealed earlier this week that Peterson had tested positive for a banned steroid, which had put the Las Vegas showdown in doubt.

Khan used his Twitter account on Wednesday to disclose that his match against Peterson has been abandoned, and he blamed the champion for it.

"The fight is off! sorry everyone the only person to blame is @kingpete26 I'll be looking for a opponent to fight June 30th," The Daily Mirror quoted Khan's tweet, as saying.

A statement from promoters Golden Boy confirmed the news.

It read: "A failed pre-fight drug test administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), coupled with the Nevada State Athletic Commission's (NSAC) legal inability to hold a formal hearing on the matter of licensing Lamont Peterson for his Saturday, May 19 rematch against Amir Khan until Tuesday, May 15, has forced the cancellation of the event."

Peterson tested positive on both 'A' and 'B' samples from a test submitted in March, according to Schaefer.

Khan now hopes see his titles returned to him, or at least to be allowed to fight for the vacant belts, on his proposed June 30 date. (ANI)
