Mali's cabinet adopts amnesty law for soldiers involved in coup d'etat
Bamako, May 10 (Xinhua-ANI): The first ordinary session of the cabinet of Mali's transitional government on Wednesday adopted an amnesty law for the soldiers who were involved in the March 21 mutiny as well as those who carried out the coup d'etat on March 22, 2012.
Sources close to the secretary general of the Malian government said that the bill which was submitted by the justice minister, was adopted after the government carried out two amendments.
The first amendment touched on identification of all the beneficiaries of this measure. This is very important because to this day, no one knows the exact composition of the National Committee for the Redressment of Democracy and Restoration of the State (CNRDRE) that was set up by the junta after the March 22 coup d'etat.
The second amendment touches on the limitation of the period covered by the amnesty. The initial bill was only concerned with the events that occurred on March 21 and 22, meaning the mutiny and the coup d'etat.
However, the government noted that the period should be extended to the date of swearing in of the interim president on April 12, 2012. This is the date that marks the official return of the constitutional order that was largely demanded by Malian citizens, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the rest of the international community.
This amnesty was an important provision in the agreement that was signed on April 6, 2012 between the CNRDRE and ECOWAS for the return of constitutional order. (Xinhua-ANI)
