Srinagar, May 9(ANI): Police officials in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday foiled a protest staged by state government employees demanding an extension of the retirement age and confirmation of temporary employees.
The strike, which began earlier on Tuesday, saw employees raising slogans.
The president of the Jammu and Kashmir Government Employees' Joint Association, Qayoom Ahmed Wani, said the government had so far only spoken about raising the retirement age, but had not touched upon other issues.
"We have got three separate issues. First, raising the retirement age from 58 to 60. Second, we want the temporary employees to be confirmed. Third, anomalies in all the departments must be done away with," Wani said.
He also warned the government against cracking down upon protesters, saying that their protest was peaceful and that they had no intention of politicizing it.
" We have never put undue pressure on the government, and we do not want them to crack down upon us. Our commitment is with the state government employees. We are neither politicians nor traders," Wani said.
Police officials in riot gear jostled with protesters, taking them into custody and used water cannons to disperse them. Some of them were taken away in police trucks with an aim to foil their agitation. (ANI)
