Not backing Mukherjee for president: BJP

Delhi,Politics, Wed, 09 May 2012 IANS

New Delhi, May 9 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday distanced itself from senior party leader Yashwant Sinha favouring Congress leader and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee as a presidential candidate.

A day after Sinha wished luck to Mukherjee in the Lok Sabha for moving to the "big house", meaning the president's house, party leader Gopinath Munde said Sinha did not mean to say that he was supporting his presidential candidature.

Sinha was however quoted by the Economic Times newspaper to have said: "Mukherjee is suited to occupy the post of president."

"If someone does something good, we should appreciate him," Munde said referring to Mukherjee.

"But it does not mean we support him as a presidential candidate," he said.

Asked about Sinha's comment, he said "he did not mean that", refusing any further comment.

The BJP leader added that he will not comment on who would be the candidate supported by BJP.

"We will not comment on this (presidential candidate). It will be decided in the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) meeting, we will comment only after that," he said.
