Kerala mulls law to protect women

Thiruvananthapuram, May 8 (IANS) The Kerala government may enact a new law to uphold the dignity of women, state Home Minister T. Radhakrishnan said Tuesday during his first official meeting here with top police officials.

"Of late, the state has seen numerous cases where the dignity of women was being affected, specially in public places. Kerala is known for several path-breaking legislations and we will not hesitate to form a new law that will uphold the dignity and decency of women," he said.

He also said the government wanted the community policing and police student cadet initiative strengthened and extended.

The minister also expressed his concern over people hiring gangs to kill their rivals.

"This is unacceptable to the people of the state. We have a law to curb this menace. If you think that it has to be revisited to strengthen it, we can do that," he said.

He said a new policy was being formulated to honour police officials who did commendable service.
