Inking pact with U.S. not a threat Afghanistan's neighbors: Karzai
Kabul, May 3 (Xinhua-ANI): Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on Thursday assured the country's neighbors that signing strategic partnership with the United States does not pose any threat to them.
"There is no threat from Afghanistan soil to our neighbors," Karzai told journalists at a press conference just one day after inking strategic pact with his U.S. counterpart President Barack Obama.
Obama paid a surprise visit to Kabul late Tuesday night. During his stay, Obama inked the strategic pact with Karzai and visited main U.S. military base in Bagram.
Karzai said that the national interests of Afghanistan had been taken into account in the agreement and hoped the pact would be approved by the Afghan parliament and U.S. Congress.
He noted that under the pact, the U.S. needs to support Afghanistan in all fields including economy and security.
According to the president, Afghanistan wants to further enhance relations with both Pakistan and Iran. He added that the U. S.-led coalition forces instead of fighting terrorists in Afghan villages should pursue them in their sanctuaries outside Afghan borders.
Afghan officials and some security circles accused Pakistan and Iran of supporting Taliban militants to fight Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces in Afghanistan, a claim rejected by both countries.
The Afghan president reiterated his called for Taliban militants to give up fighting and return home, a request which had been rejected by Taliban outfit in the past. (Xinhua-ANI)
