SC reserves order on Mayawati's plea against CBI probe in disporportionate assets case

New Delhi, Tue, 01 May 2012 ANI

New Delhi, May 1 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its order on former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati's plea challenging a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the disproportionate assets case lodged against her over eight years ago.

During earlier hearings, the CBI had maintained that there was "ample evidence" to show that Mayawati, who is the president of the Bahujan Samaj party (BSP), had amassed wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income.

Mayawati had filed a petition in May 2008 seeking quashing of the criminal proceedings against her in the case, alleging it was an act of political vendetta.

She claimed she had received the money through donations from party workers.

The CBI had questioned Mayawati on her assets, which had risen from Rs.one crore in 2003 to Rs 50 crore in 2007. (ANI)
