Socio-economic development intensifies in Northeast

Agartala , Sun, 29 Apr 2012 ANI

Agartala, Apr 29(ANI): The decline of militancy in the northeast has meant that the socio- economic growth of the rural areas has gained momentum, with several government schemes being implemented in the region.esidents of Dinemara Village weave clothes and sell them in markets. Earlier, they faced a militancy threat. However all such fears have subsided now. The self-employed villagers are happy as they can send their children to schools and look after their families.

Talking about limited support from the government, the villagers said they want better supply and sale facilities to enhance their share in the local market.

"All our products go out, but if an emporium could be started here and raw materials supplied to us at reasonable rates, it would provide us a good market," said Sudarshan Sarkar, a weaver.

Many villagers, mostly women, have also taken up pisciculture, and a large number of them also work under MGNREGA and other government schemes.

"We rear pigs and also work under the MGNREGA. It enables us to send our children to schools," Mninabati Debarma, a villager, said.

The village school has a high level of attendance, as the parents do not fear militant attacks anymore. The schools have been renovated under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) and midday meal schemes have been started to attract more students.

"It is a remote area but as road connectivity has improved, attendance has gone up. Under the SSA scheme, the students are entitled to mid-day meals. The teachers are also paid a bonus of Rs. 500," informed Nakul Chandra Debbarma, Headmaster.

The villages have metalled roads, built under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna. It facilitates the locals to carry their commodities to markets and also allows students to reach their schools. This is a positive change in the region and hopefully, its just the beginning. (ANI)
