Malkangiri, Apr 28 (ANI): Disillusioned by the Maoist ideology, a top woman rebel commander Nirmala, involved in various incidents of violence, surrendered before the police in Orissa's Malkangiri District.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, South-Western Range, Soumendra Priyadarshi said she was the wife of Poplur and Kalimela Naxal Dalam commander Praveen, who had surrendered earlier in this month.

"An important leader Nirmala of Poplur and Kalimela Naxal Dalam in Malkangiri has surrendered. She was the wife of Poplur and Kalimela Naxal Dalam commander, Praveen. She was working with the Maoist organisation since nine years. She was involved in various incidents that took place in the last seven-eight years," said Priyadarshi.

Priyadarshi added that Nirmala revealed during the investigation that the cadres of Andhra Pradesh tortured her.

"They told that the Andhra Pradesh cadres used to torture them and during a medical treatment, Praveen was forcefully made to go through vasectomy, due to which they were unable to have a child, which led them to surrender," added Priyadarshi.

Priyadarshi further said that the state government would provide her with the rehabilitation package.

Thirty-year-old Nirmala, who was part of the rebel group since the past ten years, was the deputy commander of Poplur and Kalimela Naxal Dalam areas. (ANI)
