Vaughan says Strauss needs 'ugly runs' to end Test drought

London , Thu, 26 Apr 2012 ANI

London, Apr 26(ANI): Former England captain Michael Vaughan has advised Test skipper Andrew Strauss to 'get ugly' to silence critics and secure his captaincy for the future.

He also said Strauss' Test ton drought that stretches back to November 2010 and 25 innings, could easily end at Lord's next month.

Vaughan reckoned Strauss would have to get himself over the line the ugly way before pushing on towards the Ashes in 2013.

"If there was one ground Straussy wants to go to needing a hundred it is Lord's. He'll arrive there and think, this is my ground, and it is where I feel comfortable. If he scores a hundred all this talk will go away, but until he gets it, for a player of his ability, it will be a question mark over him," The Daily Mirror quoted Vaughan, as saying.

He just has to score runs come May 17th and the first Test, and I do think he will. I just think he's got more to give and he's not at the end of the road yet. But I would say he'll need some ugly runs first. Somehow he's just got to get a score. It is similar to me in 2008, I'd had a terrible tour of New Zealand, but we'd won so I wasn't under huge threat, but you want to score runs," he added. (ANI)
