Malaysia honours role of Sikh community in nation's development on Baisakhi

Kuala Lumpur, Apr 14 (ANI): Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, paid tribute to the Sikh community in the country on the occasion of Baisakhi.

He said that the community had played an important role in developing Malaysia's social, economic and education system which should be continued for the country's growth, The Star reports.

Wishing all Sikhs a happy Baisakhi in a celebration at a Gurudwara Sahib in Sentul, he said, "I was informed that there are about 250,000 Sikhs nationwide. However, it is not about the size of the community, but its role in society which they have played so well."

During the event, he also announced that 500,000 Malaysian Ringdit would be given to the Sikh community in Sentul to fund the social and cultural activities of Punjabi students residing in the city.

"The economic cake that we have built must be further expanded so that we can all share such wealth. Everybody must work together because we have a long agenda to fulfill," Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister of the country, was quoted as saying,.

Muhyiddin also emphasized that the Sikh community was a strong supporter of the Barisan Nasional government and hoped such backing would continue. (ANI)
