Africa,Malawi,Politics, Fri, 06 Apr 2012 IANS

Lilongwe, April 6 (IANS) Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika died Thursday afternoon following an heart attack, Xinhua reported. He was 78.

Born in February, 1934, Mutharika studied in India and the US during his younger days. He also had-long term experience as a UN and World Bank official. He first elected to office in 2004 and was returned with an overwhelming majority in 2009.

A health official at the Kamuzu Central Hospital, where the president was rushed to for medical attention, confirmed he had died.

He died after the doctors failed to resuscitate him, the official said, requesting anonymity.

The Malawi government, however, has not officially announced Mutharika's death.

On Thursday evening, the Malawi State House issued a statement on a television saying Mutharika would be flown to South Africa for medical treatment.

One of the doctors who treated Mutharika said the president was 'clinically dead' on Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest, BBC reported.
