Mary Kom, Sarita look to secure Olympic berth

New Delhi, April 4 (IANS) Five times women's World boxing champion MC Mary Kom and L Sarita Devi will look to secure a berth in the London Olympics 2012 when they compete in the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships scheduled to be held at Qinhuangdao, China, May 9-20.

 

The World Championships will serve as the only qualifying event for the London Games, where competition will be held in three weight categories (51kg, 60kg and 75kg) in the sport of women's boxing.

 

India will field three boxers in the Olympic weight category. Mary Kom (51 kg), Sarita Devi (60kg) and Pooja Rani (75kg)

 

For the very first time in history, women boxers will be competing at the Olympic Games. With 24 quotas places up for grabs, the seventh edition of the World Championships is sure to be competitive.

 

The top eight boxers in each of the Olympic weight categories will qualify for the London Games, which essentially means all the quarter finalist in the Fly weight (51kg), Light weight (60kg) and Middle weight (75kg) will win an Olympic quota place.
