'Struggling' BlackBerry maker Research in Motion to focus on business customers

Washington, Fri, 30 Mar 2012 ANI

Washington, Mar 30(ANI): Struggling BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) has said it will cede most consumer markets and focus on business customers after its revenue fell by 25 percent.

RIM has been struggling after Americans switched from BlackBerrys to flashier touch-screen phones such as Apple's iPhone and models that run Google's Android software.

The company also admitted in a conference call that "some BlackBerry models are not selling as well as anticipated".

Apple sold 37 million iPhones in the last three months of 2011which is more than what RIM shipped in the past three quarters. RIM shipped 11.1m BlackBerrys in the latest quarter, which ended March 3.

"We plan to refocus on the enterprise business and capitalize on our leading position in this segment. We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried to be everybody's darling and all things to all people. Therefore, we plan to build on our strength," The Telegraph quoted chief executive Thorsten Heins, as saying.

A RIM statement said it has incurred a net loss in the latest quarter because of writedowns for the declining value of its brand and its PlayBook tablet inventory. (ANI)
