Mau, Wed, 21 Mar 2012 ANI

Mau, Mar 21 (ANI): Irked by the death of an undertrial, the inmates of a prison at Mau in Uttar Pradesh turned violent and clashed with jail authorities on Wednesday.

Briefing the mediapersons, Superintendent of Police, Mau, Omkar Singh said that in the melee, two jail officials were critically injured.

The outraged inmates have blamed the authorities of medical negligence and alleged that dereliction of duty led to the death of the 22-year-old Sayed Ur Rehman.

The inmates attacked the prison staff with iron bars and utensils when they entered the barracks to examine Rehman.

Two Deputy Jailors, Rakesh Singh and Uday Raj Patel were critically injured. The inmates also attacked three other wardens during the clash.

"The inmate who was housed in the prison since August 2010 was ill and his health deteriorated at night, as he was vomiting and had an upset stomach. He died early in the morning around 5'O clock at which other infuriated inmates clashed with two jail officials, Rakesh Singh and Uday Raj Patel. Both of them were badly wounded by the inmates," said Singh.

Singh further said the body of the deceased inmate has been sent for post-mortem while a thorough probe into the matter is under progress.

"Initial investigation has been made by the District Magistrate and the body of the dead inmate has been sent for post-mortem. The family members of the deceased person were informed. Since the person was from the same district, they arrived at the earliest. And the two jail officials who were injured badly have been sent to Banaras (Varanasi) for medical treatment," added Singh.

This is the second incident of prison violence in Uttar Pradesh over the past ten days.

Earlier on March 11 a clash broke out at the District Jail in Basti, in which one person was killed and several others were injured. (ANI)
