Bhopal/Aligarh, Mar 13 (ANI): The Congress Party observed a shutdown in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday in protest against the killing of Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Narendra Kumar Singh by the mining mafia in the region.

The shutdown was observed in Bhopal and other towns of the state.

Members of the Congress Party led a procession in Bhopal and raised slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government in Madhya Pradesh over the killing.

"There is no law and order left in Madhya Pradesh. If today the people like the top officials of the police and bureaucracy are not safe, then what is left? Our sisters and daughters are not safe on the roads," said Ishwar Singh Chauhan, a local Congress leader.

"The mining mafia has exploited Madhya Pradesh and has literally sold it off to the criminals. The Congress party has called for this shutdown as a protest for all this," he added.

Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh visited the house of the IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh city and met family members of the deceased police official.

Singh said that the law and order situation in Madhya Pradesh is crumbling down and there was the need for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

"The mineral resources are being exploited illegally in the state. It is being done in the forestlands. The legislators of Madhya Pradesh had complained about this to the federal government and the investigations have started. The law and order scene is in shambles," said Singh.

"Murders are being done on contract basis. The people of the Bharatiya Janata Party are involved in this, and the Chief Minister calls himself a clean person. We have to look into this and I will request both the Central and State governments to conduct a CBI inquiry into this," he added.

Singh, who was posted at Banmore as Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), was crushed to death under the wheels of a tractor-trolley last Thursday, allegedly by a member of the mining mafia, when he tried to stop the vehicle which was illegally carrying stones at Banmore in Morena District.

The state government had earlier ordered a judicial probe in the matter. (ANI)
