Imphal, Mar 10 (ANI): Kathak,a major classical dance form of Northern India, has found a new disciple here in 15-year- old Toijam Jayatek from Imphal.

Popularly known as Chanu, Jayatek is a student of Kathak Guru Heikham Bonamali who happens to be the disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj, the leading exponent of the dance form.

Jayatek, who was born in an art-loving family, gained recognition at the age of three, when she performed a Manipuri classical dance.

She started learning Kathak at the age of 11 from Bonomali and Guru Sanaton.

"I like Kathak dance since childhood. In this field we use lots of expression and different costume, which I like very much," said Jayatek.

Apart from Manipuri and Kathak, Jayatek takes keen interest in vocal and instrumental music, yoga, painting and drama.

She has choreographed many Kathak dance dramas and has performed in numerous concerts.

Jayatek's parents are proud of her involvement with a variety of art forms. I am expecting my daughter to become a best dancer in the world," said Toijam Kuber, father.

"We are trying our level best to encourage her in both studies and art forms," said Thoibi Leima, mother.

Jayatek's efforts have helped popularise Kathak in the state. (ANI)
