London, Mar 10 (ANI): Robbie Savage's 64-year-old father has slipped into a coma and the former footballer was keeping a vigil at his hospital bedside on Friday.

Savage, 37, is at Wrexham's Maelor Hospital, where his father Colin has been treated for a rare form of Alzheimer's called Pick's disease, which kills victims within 10 years.

"Life is so unfair! You only have one dad and mine has been the best ever X," the Daily Express quoted him as tweeting.

The Welsh international who has had spells at Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City, recalled how his father was "the proudest man ever" less than a year ago when he walked out on to the pitch with him for his last match for Derby County.

But he revealed the agony of coping with a loved one with dementia. His father would point at him on the ward and ask people, "Do you know who that is?"

Savage took part in 'Strictly Come Dancing' last year as a treat for his mother, Val, a big fan of the show. (ANI)
