Bareilly, Mar 1 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajnath Singh on Thursday hit out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati over her failure to maintain law and order in the state.
Singh also took a dig at Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadava, saying the anti-social elements had become bolder during his regime and the whole state was reeling under a wave of terror.
"Was the condition of the state fine during the regime of Samajwadi Party (SP)? How was it different than the present government? The anti-social elements had become bolder during their regime. The integrity of women was at stake and they were being raped. The whole state was reeling under a wave of terror. Everyone was saying that any government except SP was acceptable to them," said Singh.
"It is at that time Mayawati asked the people of the state to vote her to power and she would put behind bars Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amar Singh (Rashtriya Lok Manch chief) behind the bars. However, it's been five years now since you became the chief of the state. We are not even talking about Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amar Singh, you have failed to put behind bars even a small party worker of SP," he added.
Campaigning for the seventh phase of assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, which will take place on March 3, ended today evening. 60 constituencies spread over ten districts in western Uttar Pradesh and Terai region are covered in this phase.
The fate of 962 candidates including 100 women will be decided in this phase. Over one crore 80 lakh voters are expected to cast their votes in this phase.
The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major political parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.
The first, second, third, fourth and fifth phases of polling occurred on February 8, 11, 15, 19, and 23 respectively. A new 403-member state assembly will be elected in March.
The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
