Supreme Court to hear intercepted 26/11 terrorist conversations on Thursday

new Delhi , Wed, 22 Feb 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Feb.22 (ANI): The Supreme Court will on Thursday hear intercepted conversations that took place between the ten Pakistani terrorists who were involved in the November 26 to 29, 2008 terror strike on Mumbai that resulted in the death of over 160 people.

A two-judge bench of the apex court comprising Justices Aftab Alam and C K Prasad will hear the conversations in the presence of counsels representing lone surviving terrorist Ajmal Kasab and the Maharashtra Government.

The Maharashtra Government had last week opposed Kasab's plea to seek leniency from the Supreme Court.

The Maharashtra Government had also said Kasab's rights were not being violated and that death was a permissible means of punishment.

Former Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam, appearing for the state government said Kasab has not been tortured or maltreated, nor had his constitutional rights been violated.

On the other hand, Kasab has challenged the Bombay High Court judgement, and claimed that he had been brainwashed like a "robot" into committing the heinous crime in the name of "God". He also cited his young age for not being given capital punishment.

Kasab, who is lodged in Mumbai's Arthur Road prison, had moved the special leave petition through the jail authorities. (ANI)
