Manipur's Zomi Tribe celebrates its National Day

Imphal, Feb.21 (ANI): Manipur's Zomi Tribe celebrated its 64th Zomi National Day (Zomi Nam Ni) here on Monday with a cultural and musical extravaganza.

 

Various cultural troupes from different parts of the state performed their traditional dances under the theme "Cultural Conformity" at Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT) in Manipur city.

 

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh graced the event as the chief guest along with other dignitaries.

 

The Joint Director of Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Solomon Zingkhai said that such cultural programmes would promote cultural heritage and socio-economic development within the state.

 

"We want to unite all the human beings. The tribal people are rich in culture and when we exchange this culture, the solidarity and unity can be meet in the near future. And we can walk together for the socio-economic development and cultural heritage," said Joint Director of Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Solomon Zingkhai.

 

Different tribes of the state including Mizo, Thadou, Tangkhul and Zomi presented their cultural dances and enthralled the audience at the celebration.

 

"This is the most important for the Zomi tribe and we are happy that we can celebrate India's Imphal. So, we are especially happy on behalf of the Tangkhul people and I thank you for all those who are coming to celebrate Zomi Nam Ni," said a participant, Chung Lun Mawi.

 

Well-known folk singer, Guru Rewben Mashangva, Zomi Artistes' Association and many famous singers from Mizoram presented melodious songs at the event.

 

The Zomi National Day is observed as the day when Zomi tribe attained freedom from the British colonial rule in 1948.

 

Zomi is a major tribe comprising of nine sub-tribes, with rich culture and traditions found in different parts of Manipur as well as Myanmar, Bangladesh.

 

Every year, February 20 is celebrated as the National Day for the Zomis, a day of celebration and festivities. (ANI)
