Jammu and Kashmir Govt. upgrades post offices with computerization

Srinagar , Sun, 19 Feb 2012 ANI

Srinagar, Feb 19 (ANI): People in Srinagar welcomed the initiative taken by the state government to upgrade all the post offices in the region with latest computer technology.

John Samuel, Chief Postmaster, General Post Office, Srinagar on Sunday told reporters that people in the region would get a lot of benefit from computerizing postal service, which was started recently in the valley.

"General Post Office (GPO) has been fully computerized as on date, but we will be taking steps to computerize every departmental post office this year. In fact 250 post offices will be computerized during this year as fully computerized network post offices," said Samuel.

The computers have already been received in all the post offices. Now it is the question of implementation in terms of computerization, training and the networking together," he added.

Residents here are happy with computerization of postal service. They are appreciative of the postal department authorities as courier services are very expensive and out of reach for a common man.

"In the past few years General Post Office (GPO) has taken a lot of actions and done a lot of activities in order to come into the eyes of people. The other courier companies are very expensive as compare to GPO and I feel that this is not correct. GPO is very reasonable and it provides us all the facilities properly as government runs it and therefore it is reasonable," said Smita, a resident.

At present, people are taking advantage of the speed post service as it is very quick and people can send their posts and parcels easily at pocket friendly charges.

Despite the Internet or other electronic mailing facilities GPO has its own importance but twenty years of insurgency has also affected the postal services.

The state authorities would also be opening a Digital Post office in the valley, which would ease the services for the people. (ANI)
