Police baton charge voters outside a polling booth in Raibareilly, UP

Raibareilly/Banda, Feb 19 (ANI): Police on Sunday baton charged angry voters protesting against missing names from the voting list, outside a polling booth in Uttar Pradesh's Raibareilly District.

 

Fourth phase of voting commenced for 56 assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh amid tight security on Sunday.

 

Police officials dispersed the angry voters to ensure that voting continues peacefully.round 1.74 crore voters are set to seal the fate of candidates belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP), along with several other independent candidates and other regional factions.

 

The fourth phase of polling is covering eleven districts of the state including bastion of Nehru-Gandhi family, Rae Bareilly, and Hardoi, Unnao, Lucknow, Farukkhabad, CSM Nagar, Kannauj, Banda, Chitrakoot, Fatehpur and Pratapgarh.

 

Voters turned up in large numbers to exercise their franchise in Banda District of the state.

 

Anjana Kumari, a resident said that people should elect an honest and hard working candidate who would work for the development of the area.

 

"Everybody should cast their vote and that too in the favour of candidates who will work for the development of the area. Voting is our most important right because if we don't practice our franchise then a deserving candidate will not win and we will have to face a lot of problems after that," said Kumari.

 

The state polls in Uttar Pradesh are being viewed as an opportunity for India's major parties to re-establish or strengthen their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.

 

Elections in Uttar Pradesh would be held through seven-phase polling for 403 constituencies. Polling in Uttar Pradesh began on February 8 and will conclude on March 3.

 

Results would be declared on March 6. (ANI)
