Prince William credits Queen for saving his wedding from turning into gala event

Melbourne, Feb 14 (ANI): In a BBC documentary 'The Diamond Queen,' Prince William has revealed how his grandmother, the Queen, prevented his April wedding to Kate Middleton from turning into a gala event for people the couple had never met.

The Dutch of Cambridge said Palace officials planned to invite hundreds of people who he had not known before, but then the Queen stepped in and told him to scrap the guest list and invite his friends.

"I walked into the first meeting and literally got presented with a list with 777 names. I looked at it and there wasn't one person on there I knew," the Herald Sun quoted William as saying.

"It brought a sense of dread and fear over what was going to happen ... I sort of said: 'This is not the way it's going to be. Let's start again.

"I rang my grandmother for some clarification and duly got told that it was ridiculous and that I should start with my own friends," he revealed.

William also revealed in the documentary, which was screened in Britain, that his wedding outfit was a source of family dispute.

"Within the Irish Guards Regiment there's several variances of dress you can wear and I was opting for a different type of dress to the one I wore on the day," he said.

"My grandmother very much decided that the red tunic was very smart and the appropriate one to wear for the day. So I was duly told on that occasion, so I did as I was told," the Prince stated.

His brother and best man, Prince Harry, said their grandmother made the right call.

"His red tunic was definitely the one to wear. So she was right - as she always is," Harry said.

He also admitted to being "just as nervous as William".

The Diamond Queen, a three-part documentary, explores how the Queen has modernised the monarchy during her reign. (ANI)
