New Delhi , Mon, 13 Feb 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Feb 13 (ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has said economic growth is essential for the people, but should take place in a way which does not harm the environment.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, Dr. Singh said on twitter: "Economic growth is essential for the people, but we cannot allow growth to be pursued in a manner which damages our environment."

Environment Ministers of the BASIC countries- Brazil, South Africa, India and China- called on the Prime Minister here today.

The leaders are supposed to have focused on working out a common and concerted strategy on the proposed new global climate change regime during the meeting.

The BASIC countries have emerged as a key component for a successful outcome in climate talks since the Copenhagen round of talks in 2009. (ANI)
