Mauritius PM in India to strengthen bilateral ties

New Delhi, Feb 7 (ANI): Mauritius Prime Minister, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who is in India on a six-day visit to ramp up bilateral economic and security ties, began the official leg of his tour with a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Tuesday.

 

Ramgoolam, accompanied by his wife Veena Ramgoolam arrived in India on Monday. He was greeted by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan.

 

During his visit he is expected to sign several agreements in the fields of economy and security to boost bilateral ties with traditional friend India.

 

Ramgoolam is also accompanied by a high level ministerial delegation, senior officials and business leaders who will hold discussions with their Indian counterparts in New Delhi and Mumbai.

 

Later in the day, the Mauritius Prime Minister is expected to meet the President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari and will hold discussions with Prime Minister Singh.

 

Ramgoolam will also be conferred with an honorary doctorate by the Kurukshetra University on Wednesday.

 

Ramgoolam visit follows that of President Patil to Mauritius last year.

 

India-Mauritius share historical and cultural linkages, which have grown into a modern vibrant partnership.

 

Ramgoolam traces his ancestral lineage to the state of Bihar and is the son of Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, considered the Father of the Nation in Mauritius. (ANI)
