UP Police says main poll focus is to seize illegal arms

Lucknow, Jan 27 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday said their main focus is to seize illegal arms in the poll-bound state with an aim of preventing unrest, and added that stringent action would be initiated against those indulging in such illegal activities.

 

Meanwhile, city police here recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition and arrested one person.

 

Director General of Police (DGP), Dhruv Kant Thakur, said Lovely Tiwari was caught after police received a tip-off.

 

"We received information and based on that, the police did the recovery. We recovered a carbine, pistols, 11 country-made pistols of 315 bore, on country-made pistols of 12 bore and the cartridges recovered are all in front of you. The name of the person from whom we have recovered the arms is Lovely Tiwari alias Kuldeep Tiwari alias Rajesh Tiwari," he told reporters here.

 

Thakur further said Tiwari was also wanted in connection with a murder case.

 

He said security has been stepped up in the state following the Election Commission of India's (ECI) instructions.

 

"We are working on the orders of the Election Commission and our main focus is on the recovery of illegal arms. We have this order that we must look for illegal arms, as there can be unrest due to them. Keeping that in mind, we have deployed our teams and all those who deal in illegal weapons will be severely punished," Thakur said.

 

Polls in Uttar Pradesh are to be conducted in seven phases between February 8 and March 3. The counting of votes would take place on March 6.
