Rudrapur, Jan 20 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today campaigned for the Congress Party in Uttarakhand ahead of the upcoming assembly polls in the state.

While addressing an election rally in Rudrapur, Dr. Singh urged the people of Uttarakhand, to vote for the Congress Party in order to usher in social and economic development in the state.

"Brothers and sisters, I believe that you will use your judgment wisely when you cast your vote on January 30 and understand as to which party would swiftly bring about social and economic development and ensure their happiness. I am sure you are able to compare the amount of development work that was undertaken during the rule of the Congress party from 2002 to 2007 as compared to the last five years under the BJP government," he said.

Singh informed about the development activities carried out by the Congress during its rule in the state.

"From the year 2002 to 2007, when the Congress Government was in power in the state, Uttarakhand saw new avenues of development. During this period, in order to ensure that industrialization takes place, new infrastructure was developed. New roads, airports, information technology parks were established. New power projects were started" he said.

He added that there was need to take steps to prevent the migration of the youth from state in search of employment.

"The present state government has failed to contain the migration of the youth from the hills in search of employment. I believe that in order to take out Uttarakhand from the bad situation and ensure that it treads on the path of growth and urged them to vote for the Congress party on January 30," said Singh.

The state's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government has been marred by several corruption charges that have led to the removal of Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank as chief minister. He was replaced by B C Khanduri.

Elections in Uttarakhand will be held on January 30. (ANI)
