S. African police chief knows why Brit-Indian honeymooner planned to kill his wife

Cape Town, Wed, 19 Jan 2011 ANI

Cape Town, Jan 19 (ANI): South African police chief General Bheki Cele has claimed that his department has figured out the exact reason why the British-Indian millionaire Shrien Dewani planned to kill his wife, Anni, during their honeymoon in Cape Town last year.

General Cele said the reason could be revealed during the groom's extradition hearing in London tomorrow.

"Until we are out there in the court, we can't put out there what is our motive. I don't think it will be really proper for me to come with the motive here," the Daily Mail quoted him, as saying.

Following the murder, four South Africans were arrested in connection with the crime and one sentenced to 18 years in jail, but police there believe that Shrien had 'masterminded' the plot.

Four days after the murder of Anni Dewani, Cele had claimed that Shrien was 'not a suspect' in the case, but later he formally announced the Indian-origin businessman as the suspect by describing him as 'a monkey who came all the way from London to murder his wife' in South Africa.

His comments are likely to be used by Dewani's defence team as evidence that he would not get a fair trial in South Africa.

Shrien has denied to have killed his wife, and insisted all these while that he is be victimised by South Africa to safeguard the tainted image of its tourism industry.

"Clearly the chief of police in South Africa has already tried and convicted Shrien weeks ago," Dewani's spokesman Max Clifford said.

Anni was shot dead when the couple's taxi was hijacked as it drove through a township outside Cape Town on November 13 last year. (ANI)
