TN Govt subsidises cement at Rs. 200 per bag for economically weak

The warning of state government has seems to have triggered correctly as seven private cement manufacturers have become ready to sell cement at a subsidised price of Rs. 200 per bag for the economically weaker people belonging to lower and lower middle class family, spokesperson of cement manufacturers in the state confirmed it.

The Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had threatened to all cement companies holding manufacturing unit in state to transform their companies into nationalise companies if the owner of the companies would not become ready to sell the cement in reduced price for a specific section of the society in the state.

After heavy exercise, the major seven cement manufacturing companies have yesterday offered the proposal of selling a maximum of 400 bags per family belonging to lower and lower middle class society for constructing home in the range of 500-1000 sq.ft. at a reduced price of Rs. 200 per bag.

The representatives of cement manufacturing companies including N. Srinivasan from India Cements, P.R. Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha from Madras Cements, M A M R Muthiah from Chettinad Cement Corporation yesterday offered the proposal of selling 20 lakh bags of blended cements in all districts of the state nearby surrounding areas of their production and public distribution unit every month.

The other manufacturing companies in the state include Grasim Industries, Ultratech Cement, Dalmia Cement (Bharat) and the Associated Cement Companies have also supported the selling proposal.

On the basis of consuming calculation of 20 kg cement per sq. ft, companies has argued to offer 400 bags per family for constructing a maximum of 1000 sq. ft premise in just Rs.200 per bag whereas the price of the cement ranges in the market between Rs.250-300.

The eligible family can get the advantage of this offer after getting approval of any concerned authority being appointed by the state government. “The buyers will have to pay in advance through the total collective price of the cement as per their requirements�, informed companies' delegate.

“The manufacturers will directly deliver the cement to the buyer.�, they added.

A senior government official has informed the media that the Industries department would issue guidelines for the implementing the scheme from Thursday.

Besides this the representatives have also offered to state government to deliver 14 lakh bags of cement per month to state-run public sector Corporation Tancem (Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation) in a reducing price of Rs 220 a bag offering concession of Rs. 10 for each bag since now. Earlier it provided it at Rs. 230 per bag to the same organisation.

Each bag of cement contains 50-kg cement.

The executives of the cement manufacturing companies have expressed ‘thanks' to Chief Minister for their kindly wholehearted support stating that the industry is operating with 100 per cent full capacity and the consumption of cement in the State has grown by 16 per cent this year while it has grown by 10 per cent in the entire nation.
