New Delhi, Jan 14 (ANI): The Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) on Friday added another five km to its network by throwing open the Sarita Vihar-Badarpur section of the transit system.

The inaugural run was conducted at 8 a.m. in a stretch comprising three elevated stations-Mohan Estate, Tughlakabad and Badarpur.

A regular schedule will be followed from Saturday, when trains will start at 6 a.m.

The opening of this stretch will be of great benefit to the commuters of south Delhi localities such as Mohan Estate, Tughlakabad and Kalindi Kunj and the satellite town of Faridabad in Haryana.

The opening comes after months of uncertainty. The last stretch of the Violet Line - as line 6 is called - had been awaiting the Commissioner For Metro Rail Safety CMRS) green signal for some time.

Scheduled to be opened before the Commonwealth Games, the line got approval only till the Sarita Vihar station, with the CMRS shooting down the opening of the last three stations.

With trains running at a frequency of four minutes , the line will see a jump in ridership . To date, the ridership on Line 6 averaged around 1.25 lakh. This is expected to go up by a lakh with the opening of the three stations .

According to DMRC officials, four new trains will be added to the Central Secretariat-Badarpur line, bringing the total to 20.

With the extension of Line 6, the DMRC hopes to address glitches plaguing other populated lines - Dwarka-Noida /Anand Vihar and Jehangirpuri-HUDA City Centre. (ANI)
