Kolkata, Sep 29 (IANS) An all-party meeting is likely to be held in West Bengal to resolve the ongoing Singur imbroglio, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member Sitaram Yechuri said here Monday.
'It's most likely that there will be an all-party meeting called by the state government where the Singur issue will be discussed. It will be good if we can arrive at a consensus on Singur. And we are looking at that,' Yechuri said.
'Our party is trying hard so that the Tata Motors' Nano project remains in the state,' Yechuri told an interactive session entitled 'Industrialisation, Agricultural Growth and Employment' organised by the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce.
Asked which parties would be invited for the meeting, he said: 'That will be elaborated by the state government later in the day'.
The CPI-M is the major partner of the Left Front government in the state.
Auto major Tata Motors's project to roll out the world's most inexpensive car Nano, priced at Rs.100,000 ($2,250), from its plant at Singur has faced tough resistance since its inception 28 months ago over land acquisition.
Tata Motors has suspended work in Singur since Sep 2 after some of its workers were threatened and manhandled by a section of farmers, led by opposition Trinamool Congress, to protest the acquisition of their land for the Nano project.
Demanding return of the 400 acres the government acquired 'forcibly' from farmers, protesters laid siege to the factory from Aug 24, a move that prompted the company to suspend operations.
Discussions with the opposition in the presence of Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi failed to resolve the stalemate.
