Mix response over Binayak Sen's life term

New Delhi, Sat, 25 Dec 2010 NI Wire

A day after the life sentence to famous paediatrics, a renowned member of the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), and social activist Binayak Sen, country gets mixed responses from India and abroad. Surprisingly, the politicians and lawyers of Chhatishgarh - where Binayak served two decades - are keeping quiet.

A harsh response from Communist Party of India (Marxist) came into the lime light over the decision of district and session court of Raipur for awarding him life term imprisonment, quoting it "travesty of justice".

The National Secretary of CPI D.Raja annoyed, "All genuine activists like Sen and even CPI cadres are being targeted by the security forces in the state and false cases foisted on them. It is travesty of truth and justice."

But other politicians are still silent in the state weather the ruling party or the party of opposition. On asking for comment over this issue, none wants to open his/her mouth because it was courts decision not any political action.

On the other hand, Amensty International - an international non-government organisation (NGO) for protection Human Right and demanding justice for victims - has also fiercely criticised the life term sentence. In a released statement, Amnesty International said that fair trial standards were violated in the case against Dr Sen.

"The life sentence handed down against Dr Binayak Sen by the Indian state in Chhattisgarh violates international fair trial standards. Life in prison is an unusually harsh sentence for anyone, much less for an internationally recognised human rights defender who has never been charged with any act of violence," the statement said.

Earlier, the district and session court of Chhatisgarh on Friday pronounced life term imprisonment to Dr. Sen (58) and two others - Maoist leader Narayan Sanyal and Kolkata businessman Pijush Guha for finding guilty of criminal conspiracy to commit sedition, under Section 124(a) read with 20 (b) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Former solicitor general of India Soli Sorabji has also criticised the verdict.

The supporters of Dr. Sen has announced to appeal in the high court.
