Bomb scare in Punjab town baseless

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 IANS

Mohali (Punjab), Sep 28 (IANS) Three suspicious objects in the industrial town of Derabassi in Punjab created a bomb scare Sunday but police later found no explosives in them.

'After thorough investigations, we have concluded that they were mere fire-crackers containing granules of some unidentified chemical. There were no splinters or nails in them,' Senior Superintendent of Police (Mohali) Jatinder Singh Aulakh told IANS.

'We have sent the samples of this chemical to the forensic laboratory. However, they were not bombs but they might have proved dangerous if they exploded,' he added.

Residents of Derabassi, around 20 km from Chandigarh, alerted police around 9.30 a.m. when they spotted the suspicious objects near the Ghaghar bridge on the highway to New Delhi. Later, two more such objects, in the shape of a ball, were found by children playing nearby.

'Someone afraid of increased security checking after Saturday's blast in Delhi might have dropped these objects while coming to Chandigarh,' said Aulakh.
