Suspected financer of Indian Mujahideen detained, let off

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Sep 26 (IANS) A man suspected to be linked to terror group Indian Mujahideen was detained Sunday at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here but was let off after a few hours of questioning, a police official said.

Mohammed Shahdab, who has been working in Saudi Arabia for the past 12 years, was taken into preventive custody after he landed here in an Emirates flight in the morning. Shahdab is a resident of Patna.

The staff of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) detained him after they were alerted by central intelligence agencies that a man who could be a financer of the Indian Mujahideen would be landing at the international terminal and had injuries on one of his hands.

'He was then jointly interrogated by the sleuths of Delhi Police Special Cell and Intelligence Bureau (IB). But Shahdab was later let off as nothing concrete could be found against him,' a top Delhi Police official told IANS, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Indian Mujahideen, which is seen as radical breakaway of banned terror outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), has claimed the responsibility for the recent terror attacks in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Jaipur, and in Uttar Pradesh.
