Melbourne, Dec. 20 (ANI): Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) CEO Stephen Gough is excited that Boxing Day could produce a Test record crowd at the MCG, even as fans are keen to grab the few tickets remaining.
"Just keep looking on the Ticketek website and just see what's going because I believe there will some tickets from the corporates released that are unused and hopefully we can see plenty of demand for those and fill it up and break the record," Gough told SEN radio this morning.
Australia's stunning victory in the third Test in Perth, which levelled the Ashes series at 1-1, combined with predictions of fine weather for Boxing Day have ensured interest in the sport's iconic day is at its peak, The Age reports.
The veteran administrator called the turnaround in Australia's fortunes in Perth a "fabulous result".
Gough said: "Last time we played the Poms (2006) we were coming in here in with a three-nil (series lead) ... and huge interest still. But it's much better when you're winning and keeping the series alive."
The record Test match attendance (90,800) came in 1961, when a thrilling deadlocked series between Australia and the West Indies came to an exciting conclusion in Melbourne in the fifth Test.
Gough said: "I think we could break it ... we went pretty close last time with the Ashes and it was terrible weather. So with the interest and this one being really alive, I think we could break it."
The remaining MCC reserved seats will be on sale Tuesday morning from 9 a.m., while 10,000 MCC seats and 1000 standing room spaces will be available on the day from 7 a.m. (ANI)
