Trinamool's Mamata demands 400 acres of land for farmers
Singur/Kolkata, Sept 27 (ANI): Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has demanded 400 acres of land for farmers rendered landless by Tata Motors's small car plant.
Holding party flags and shouting slogans demanding land for the farmers, Banerjee led a protest march in Singur on Friday.
"We need for industry and farming and ancillary projects. So give 300 acre to the farmers and 100 acres to the others farmers who are working on other's land, so total of 400 acres should be handed to the farmers. I would like the authorities to take the farmers in confidence to build Singur into a modern area," said Mamata.Meanwhile, State Chief Secretary, Amit Kiran Dev in Kolkata said the West Bengal Government would meet the Tata Motors officials on Sunday to resolve the Singur impasse. In a letter to Ratan Tata, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee urged him to resume work at Singur plant and assured full protection in this regard.
Earlier, the State Cabinet had also urged the Tata Motors not to shift the Nano plant from Singur.
Trouble began after the West Bengal government acquired 1000 acres of farmland for the Tata Motors 'Nano' small car plant at Singur last year.
The government offered compensation, which some farmers rejected and the state's main opposition TMC has been demanding that at least 400 acres be returned to farmers.
The government says it is in favour of a land-based solution for farmers but was against disturbing the Tata Motors plant site. (ANI)
