WB Govt., Tata Motors to meet in last ditch efforts on Singur impasse

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Kolkata, Sept 26, (ANI): The West Bengal Government will meet the Tata Motors officials on Sunday to resolve the Singur impasse, said the State Chief Secretary, Amit Kiran Dev in Kolkata today.

In a letter to Ratan Tata, the West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee urged him to resume work at Singur plant and assured full protection in this regard.

On Thursday, the State Cabinet also urged the Tata Motors not to shift the Nano plant from Singur.

On Friday, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chief Mamata Banerjee at a rally in Singur reiterated her demand to implement the agreement, which was signed in the presence of West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi to settle the stalemate.

Meanwhile truckloads of material have started rolling out of Singur Nano factory, a sign that Tata Motors is on an exit route from West Bengal.

However, there has been no formal communication from the company so far.

Trouble began after the West Bengal government acquired 1000 acres of farmland for the Tata Motors 'Nano' small car plant at Singur last year.

The government offered compensation, which some farmers rejected and the state's main opposition TMC has been demanding that at least 400 acres be returned to farmers.

The government says it is in favour of a land-based solution for farmers but was against disturbing the Tata Motors plant site. (ANI)
