Floods displace thousands in Gorakhpur

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Gorakhpur, Sept 26 (ANI): Floods have inundated over a dozen villages and displaced thousands in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Water in the Ghagra and Kuano rivers have risen more than a feet-and-a-half since Wednesday, overflowing neighbouring villages in Gorakhpur and Deoria Districts.

River embankments caved in as the gushing water swept the banks, threatening atleast 15 houses in Pavaria village.

"Over 20 to 21 houses of our locality caved in because of floods. The area is completely inundated. Whatever we could save from the floodwater is now being destroyed by rain as we are forced to live in open. So far, no help has come for us," said Balwant Kumar, a flood victim.

While police are evacuating the marooned villagers, the administration is distributing relief including ten kilograms rice and two litres kerosene to each family.

"We are distributing relief material for flood affected Patna area. There are 12 villages facing the problem of floods," said Umashankar Gupta, a village official.

At least 100 people have been killed in Uttar Pradesh since Saturday, as heavy monsoon rains caused rivers to burst their banks, sweeping away houses. (ANI)
