Fourth Asian Women Boxing Championship gets underway in Assam

Guwahati, Sept 25 (ANI): Fourth Asian Women Boxing Championship being held in Guwahati witnesses several women boxers from insurgency-hit northeastern states of the country.

 

The six day event which got off with a colourful start on September 24 will conclude on September 28.

 

The teams from eleven Asian countries are vying for top honours. The teams participating in the championship are China, North Korea, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Macao, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and India.

 

Jiang Ping Chang, an official from Asian Boxing Federation was impressed with the arrangements and said that championships such as these were good for the future of boxing in the region.

 

"This is a very good arrangement as you can see from the venue, there is a lot of experienced staff to see that everything undergoes smoothly. Championships such as these are very good for the future of Asian women boxing," said Chang.

 

Many women boxers from insurgency-hit northeastern states of the country are also taking part in this prestigious event including internationally acclaimed women boxer L. Sarita Devi, from Manipur.

 

She said the championships will give a boost to the women boxers in the northeast region of India.

 

"I feel very proud that our northeastern state has hosted such a prestigious boxing championship. If more and more of such championships are held in the northeast the standard of boxing will improve in the state and the women boxers will get a boost," said Sarita Devi.

 

A total of 70 bouts in 13 weight categories are scheduled to take place in the championship. (ANI)
