Ponting shocked at spot-fixing allegations against Pakistani cricketers

Melbourne, Mon, 30 Aug 2010 ANI

Melbourne, Aug 30 (ANI): Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has expressed his surprise at the spot-fixing allegations labeled against Pakistani cricketers during the Lord's Test against England.

The Pakistan team is in the midst of a betting scam, where fast bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif are alleged to have bowled pre-arranged no-balls in the Lord's Test, which England won by an innings and 225 runs on Sunday.

"I am absolutely shocked at some of the things that I saw on the TV the last couple of days and some of the footage from the game at Lord's the last couple of days. I'm just blown away at some of these allegations ...," Ponting said

Members of the Pakistan team playing England at Lord's have been questioned by the Scotland Yard after the News of the World alleged that Pakistani bowlers were paid to deliberately bowl no-balls as part of a gambling scam.

"The important thing at the moment is that they are allegations as well and I don't want to get too carried away with it just yet," Ponting told SEN radio this afternoon.

"We'll all know more in the coming days and the coming weeks and hopefully the ICC can get to the bottom of this stuff as quickly as possible," he said.

The Age quoted Ponting as saying that games and individuals would be "tainted" by such allegations.

He also said that murmurs about the Sydney Test match didn't start for a few weeks, and quickly died away.

"It was a few weeks down the track when any of these allegations started about that one particular game. And there hasn't been much since until this latest thing here in the UK," he said. (ANI)
