Crime rate in Kolkata lower in comparison to other metros: West Bengal CM
Kolkata, Aug 24 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhatacharjee on Tuesday said the crime rate in Kolkata is comparatively less in comparison to the other metropolitan cities in the country.
"Crimes are increasing all over the country and Kolkata is no exception. But I can humbly claim that with the little number, minimum number of police forces, we have only 26,000 policemen in this city. If you compare with any other metropolitan city our number is less than any other metropolitan city," said Bhattacharjee inaugurating the first cyber police station here.
"But we could control crimes and also maintain communal harmony in this city. That is also very important for us," he added.
Infosys chief Narayana Murthy, who was also present on the occasion, encouraging the use of modern technology in policing said that the new technologies would definitely enhance the quality of crime detection.
"Police people in this city should keep up the god work they have done, be open minded, to learn from people who have performed better than us. Internet is full of information about cities and countries where lot more have been done," said Murthy.
"Therefore if we can in deep look at those and learn from those and make the lives of citizens as well as your own life better," he added.
Set up with technical support from Infosys Technologies, the cyber police station has been opened with the motive to keep a check on the increasing cyber related crimes.
On the occasion, the police also announced that Kolkatans could now register their complaints through e-mails.
The new cyber police station will be a centralised unit that will address all cyber crime complaints directly instead of being routed through police stations.
The unit will also serve a dual purpose, taking up complaints relating to e-mails, cyber fraud, and obscenities posted on social networking sites etc. (ANI)
