Dec 10: Only nine Indian shooters have managed to qualify for next year's Beijing Olympics. India claimed five Olympic berths in the previous edition of the Asian championship but this time they got none.
India ’s ace double trap marksman Ronjon Sodhi failed at the deciding stages to reach the finals of men's double trap event at the Asian Championships in Kuwait on Sunday.
Sodhi came up with a total of 131 after getting shots of 42, 43 and 46. Sodhi disappointed countrymen, as he was India's last hope to qualify for next year's Beijing Olympic games. Athens Olympics silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is the only quota place holder in men’s double trap.
A total of nine Indian shooters have made the cut for the biggest sporting extravaganza to be held in the Chinese capital next year. India had claimed five Olympic quota places in the previous edition of the championship at Kuala Lumpur in 2004, but this time they got nothing in their kitty.
Rathore opted out of the present competition as he was down with high fever. Vikram Bhatnagar who took his place came up with 129 through a series of 44, 42 and 43 and other contender Vikram Chopra scored (45, 42, 41) 128 also could not be able to qualify due to their low scores.
However, junior shooters kept the Indian flag soaring with Ajay Mittal claiming the gold medal and Mohmmad Asab winning the silver in the double trap event. Mittal was ahead of Sodhi and had a series of 42, 46, 45 that led a 1-2 finish for India as Mohammed Asab (43, 44, 45) 132 won the silver medal.
India ’s Akash Kumar Ravidas bagged the bronze medal in 50m rifle prone junior men's event by scoring 690.5 (590+100.5).
