Section-144 imposed to curb violent protests in Mathura

Mathura, Aug 15 (ANI): Prohibitory orders under Section-144 of the Indian Penal Code were imposed here on Sunday after three persons including a policeman and two residents died during the violent protests which continued on the second day.The farmer's demonstration intensified following the arrest of their leader Ram Babu Kateria late on Saturday.

 

In order to quell the protest, the police opened fire, killing two farmers. A police sub-inspector was also killed in the clashes.

 

The infuriated mob torched three police vehicles, a roadways bus, several trucks, bulldozers and machinery at a construction site, prompting frightened workers to flee.

 

Earlier, the protesters had set a fire the police outposts at Bajna and Bhanharhi localities, a post office on Mathura-Aligarh border and the camp office of a construction company.

 

The farmland has been acquired by the government for the 165-kilometer Yamuna Expressway linking Noida, a suburb of New Delhi, and Agra, city of the Taj Mahal, due to be completed next year at a cost of over.

 

The state government had acquired land for the rupees 90 billion project in 1,192 villages of four Uttar Pradesh districts. The farmers in Mathura are not satisfied with the compensation as it is lower than what has been paid to the farmers in Noida. (ANI)
