Delhi, Mumbai muslims protest serial blasts

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

New Delhi, Sept 17 (ANI): Scores of Muslims took to the streets in the national capital on Wednesday to protest against the recent bomb blasts in the city that claimed the lives of at least 25 people and injured over a 100.

The protesters blamed the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), for the blasts and said they plan to hand over a memorandum to the Pakistan High Commission to urge them to abstain from spreading terror in India.

"We believe that the terror activities which took place in Delhi, in Gujarat and other parts of the country are being done by SIMI. Today the activists will sign a memorandum in blood and hand it over to the Pakistan High Commission and demand that they stop all terror activities in the country," said Mohammed Younus Siddiqui, a protester.

Police have already named two Muslim suspects and released five sketches of three men, who placed the explosives across Delhi.

The "Indian Mujahideen" has claimed responsibility for the blasts, but authorities suspect it to be an offshoot of the SIMI.

New Delhi has long blamed Pakistan for fomenting trouble in India, mostly in Jammu and Kashmir, but more recently has said some of the violence may have been homegrown.

Meanwhile, Muslims in Mumbai have also condemned the terror strikes at a press conference today, stating that 'terrorists have no religion'.

The last major attack in Delhi was in October 2005, when 66 people were killed by three bombs in busy markets, just ahead of Diwali.

This year, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Bangalore were hit by serial blasts. (ANI)
